How Ten Folk and Three Hounds Fared by Paderne Stream

Wednesday 23rd April 2025

Listeth, lordes and ladyes free,

Of venturous folk, a compaignye,

That in the Algarve, sooth to say,

On Wednesday they took their way.

Ten souls they were, right hale and stout,

To ramble hill and plain about.

Ther was Martin, that led the pack,

And Ken, who ne'er did courage lack;

And Miriam, with spirit bright,

And Ros, a joyous, welcome sight.

Ther was gentle Linda, and David sly,

And Peter, with a watchful eye.

Right well-met Richard, Alan bold,

And Jan, whose tale is to be told.

With houndes three, of varied grace,

Old Rafa, Toby, Bica's face.

From Paderne village, steppéd they,

At prime, upon a sunlit day.

Down hills they went, with merrie chat,

Where smell of orange blossoms sat

Upon the air, so fresh and sweet,

A comfort unto wearie feet.

They passéd by, I make no lie,

Wher goji berries caught the eye,

A farm of fruit, a curious sight,

That shone right red in morning light.

But lo! Before them lay a stream,

No less a test than any dream.

The leader warned, with sober cheer,

"A crossing waiteth, draweth near!"

Then Ken and David, wise and grand,

Pulled out their sandals, close at hand,

And changéd shoos, with mickle care,

To wade the water, cool and fair.

Young Jan and Linda, full of glee,

Had bags of plastic, two or three,

To wrap their feet, a cunning guise,

To keep them dry from head to thighs.

But some there were, I name no names,

Who scorned such finnicky-games,

And plungéd in, with splash and sound,

And let their hose be soaking wound.

But saddest hap, and worth a sigh,

Was Rafa hound, who stood hard by.

Though largest he, and stout of bone,

His courage then was all but flown!

A wimpish yelp, a fearful glance,

He would not take that watery chance!

So lifted up, a heavie load,

Across the stream his master strode,

With dripping fur, a sight to see,

Carried like a babie.

Upon the bank, they driéd off,

With little pause, and many a scoff

At those who dripped, like sudden rain,

Then laced their walking shoos again.

Through flowery paths, they held their course,

With growing speed, and rising force,

Til suddenlie, before their face,

Appeared a weir, in that wild place!

A waterfall, though small it be,

A wonder in that countrie!

Now came the toil, the steepest climb,

A test of strength, a taxing time.

Up up they went, the path did wind,

Leaving the gentle fields behind.

At last, upon the crest they stood,

Beside a wall, both old and good.

In shadow deep, they took their ease,

And ate their lunch beneath the trees.

With bellies filled, and spirits mended,

Down to the road, their path descended.

Then turned aside, from thoroughfare,

To hamlets small, beyond compare.

Through lanes they walked, both west and south,

With dustie throat, and parched mouth.

At last, when sun was setting low,

And wearie limbs began to slow,

They spied the place, Moiras Encantadas name,

Where rest and comfort were their aim.

Upon the terrace, cool and wide,

With thirsting souls, they did abide.

And ordered drinks, of potent cheer,

To banish toil, and conquér fear

Of aching feet, and aching bone,

Content to be no more alone

With weariness, but side by side,

The Wednesday walkers, full of pride

For journey done, and humours shared,

A testament, how well they fared.

Total walk 15km approx.
Thanks to Alan as ever for his photos

Walk on Western Shores of the Arade and Funcho Baragems, 9 April 2025

Walk on Western Shores of the Arade and Funcho Baragems, 9 April 2025

A sense of relief that our maiden outing as leaders passed without incident! We had a great turnout thank to the fine weather which was perfect for walking i.e., dry and warm for the most part.

The group met at the Arade Dam car park at the 10am appointed hour and disturbed various French campers who were overnighting there. We set off more or less on schedule.

For the record, the 19 walkers included John & Susan, Stephen, David, Ken & Miriam, Marian, Steve & Karen, Caroline & Karen, Ness, Ros, Alan, Jan, Peter, Kieran & Fiona, plus guest Max who is a friend of Ness. Bica was the sole dog joining us on the day.

A steady incline early on soon gave way to a flattish track proceeding in a northerly direction along the western slopes of the Arade and Funcho baragems. The full reservoirs presented Alan with some wonderful photo opportunities.

Our first water and banana break was spent atop the Funcho dam enjoying some lovely vistas overlooking the reservoirs.

While to this point there were no major climbs, this changed once we headed “inland” following the anti-clockwise route. The first real fat burner commenced soon after and lasted more or less until we stopped for lunch around 12.30, at quite a high and breezy elevation.

After lunch the terrain changed and Ken, Miriam and Bica took the option of pursuing a slightly shorter route, with the main group following a loop through abundant Cistus plantations to the west. A steady descent brought us along a small river (all passable without issue), before a further short climb linked back in to the home straight (in parts following the via Algarvia). Some streams were overflowing on to paths but were easily negotiated.

We arrived back at the car park 5 hours after departure, corresponding to 4.5 hours walking and 0.5 hours for lunch/breaks. The total distance covered was 18.5km.

The post-mortem took place in Café Silva close by.

Thanks for your patience and thanks to John for his assistance recceing the route.

Lynx Farm & Arade.....and BEES....26 March 2025

   Lynx Farm & Arade.....and BEES....26 March 2025

Back in 2023, the AWW must have been a heartier bunch and thought nothing of the 19.6kms : when asvertised this year, there was only one likely walker, so a shortened version of about 11kms was promised..... I was then inundated with 22 walkers, a record for this year. Unfortunately, their faith in my reckoning of the distance was misplaced!

Anyway, in the beginning, we met up at the Silva cafe for caffeine.....and a tosta mista for one couple, before setting off on a bit of tarmac, thence up into the hills...I am sure you know them all, or most anyway....Susan's sister Sylvia joined us (next door to Susan & Karen)...along with Canadians Glen ( in black, back row)  & Christine ( by Kieran) . We welcomed back David, along with Ken , recovering from Antartical bugs...

In the absence of our official photographer  Alan, I took pictures of walkers' backs...

The usual trickle was a bit more after the rains...

....but all got over without mishap....with Bica enjoying the chance to cool down...

our first glimpses of the Arade showed that it was higher than it had been for a long time, after the recent rains...

The group with a view..

No one could spot a lynx at the farm....cycling John did manage to photograph not one,but two,  back in November 2017 though, thus:

Soon it was time for lunch on a promentory overlooking the Funcho barragem , highest I have ever seen it...

I'll soon be getting a reputation like Jim....being economical with the  actualitee...I said the short-cut turn off was near.....but it wasnt!.....we passed some dangerous fish...

David and Peter went ahead to scout for it.....we eventually found it, and all other than Peter wanted  it....even if it meant swapping a flat track for an uphill one!

My name was getting muddier as we ascended hill after hill....my protestations that they were easier than going down  falling on deaf ears...Linda volunteered to go on ahead to get her car for  Ken,  when we came across bees that seemed very unsttled by the attentions of a beekeeper.

Most were unfortunately stung...some multiple times....Ros with her Australian veil was OK, as was Sue...fortunately, some of us had after-sting relief gels to liberally apply, which helped a bit.

Back down in the valley , poor Russell was suffering from stings on the back of his neck , but nurse Karen with some antihistamine helped, though Linda took him off to hospital after dropping Ken at the cafe. ( Russell was treated expeditiously at the hospital and has made a full recovery).

We eventually got back to the Silva cafe for a well earned drink and  I tried to work out how my planned 11kms had  morphed into 15.....shorter than the threatened 19.6, but not what it said on the tin.

Mea culpa!
