VA Day 6 : Messines to Arade dam

VA Day 6 : Messines to Arade dam

The preliminaries for this walk could take an entire blog in themselves, but a precis to put it in context! This sector is from Messines to Silves, and at 28kms was deemed too long for a day walk, so plan B was to stop at the Funcho dam, but that would be too short at about 14kms. Plan C was to add the PR1 loop at the beginning, but that would be back to too long at 21kms, especially as four walkers were flying back  the next day. Plan D was then to add a bit at the end, finishing with an off-route walk back to Arade dam. This seemed OK, other than we would miss the church in Messines, so plan E was to add that to the start : but you guessed it, that would be too long & involve a lot of tarmac. By then, your co-ordinator was getting caught in cross-fire from those with local knowledge and those  keen to lead and became past-caring. Plan F was thus created, starting at a Dutch nursery on the outskirts of Messines, but meeting at Messines to have a coffee at Cacadores by the bus station. But that wasn't deemed  acceptable for AWW caffeine adicts, so a route to a better coffee shop was planned. In great danger of running out of alphabet, the leader made an executive decision : coffee at Cacadores, start at nursery. Though it wasn't to be....

An added confusion to the carsharing plans ( always a subject of confusion) was that Sue & my results of the covid test, due after 3 hours, hadn't arrived by the evening. Plan Z+1 was hastily devised in case we had to retest the next day, only to realise that poor Alan would be stranded in Messines ( or was it the barragem?...). Plan Z+2 catered for that as long as Ros read her emails that evening and drove to the dam rather than Messines. At 10pm, sighs of relief, negative results received after 10 hours, back to plan whatever!

Hence, it wasn't far short of a miracle that all who were supposed to turn up at the barragem actually made it.....though newcomer Peter had decided that we were all a load of wallies and decided to give his inaugural AWW walk a miss. We drove  to Messines , where the leader did some quick thinking as the Cacadores coffee shop was shut, though he found an acceptable ( to us)  establishment nearby....called Fabico Proprio, which sounds as if they made their own fabric, but think it means they make all their oewn stuff...bread, pastries etc. So far so good, though I omitted to say that Ros woke up suffering from the after-effects of her booster, and couldn't make it......though Sergio then appeared, thinking we were doing Plan A and he would turn back at a suitable point....

So, 12 set off for the nursery, what else could go  wrong?

I soon found out, being attacked by a vicious Panda boot lid....at least I was laughing, and thanks to Alan's plasters that also helped me breathe...

Off and away at last, we paused for our starter photo:

The usual suspects....plus Alan the photograper

Past the donkey stables....

.....and on to the Funcho, where the water levels were quite high....

...though the usually-submerged buildings were visible....

Rain wasn't forecast, but we did get a few transient drops....

But then the sun came out again,  giving beautiful views....

There was some debate over whether to have an early lunch or carry on to a proper picnic spot, but here's the place the canny leader had recce-ed before...

With not only great views, but seating for two....

It was then that Sergio realised we weren't walking the full 28 kms, and going back was as long as continuing, so he continued with us, there being a spare  car space going back from the dam.

A short uphill after lunch ( a leader speciality) before the Funcho dam came in sight and was crossed.

It was then all flat towards the Arade, where we departed from the VA trail and back to the cars...

Thence the drive to Messines, to find Cacadores open, so drinks and mince pies curtesy of Miriam.

Thanks to Gill & Jim for recce and walk leading, to Alan for photos and Susan for stats......though for VA purists, there is the little matter of Messines to Dutch Nursery to do one day...

17.2km ( or 17.4).....Moving 3h 31m, total 4h 27m, av speed 4.9kmh....

AWW VA Day 2 : Corte da Seda to Furnazinhas...or, The River that never was!

Day 2. Corte da Seda to Furnazinhas
Wednesday 10 November 2021

A foggy morning welcomed us as we got up and headed down for breakfast.

I noticed there was a bit of a crowd around the ham and cheese??  Especially as the scrambled eggs were available,  nice and hot , and no one seemed to be interested .Strange I thought .

After our tums were full we met outside for our morning car share discussion ( a few still confused about who ,what, and where ) finally we all got in our appropriate cars and sped off to our start point ( after dropping of cars at the finish🙄) , at Corte da Seda.

This was actually the same start point as yesterday , but then we were walking east back to Alcoutim : today, we were walking west to Furnazinhas. Alan thought he would economise by not taking a starter photo, as it would be the same as the day before's, but here we are getting ready....

Which way today?

Jan joined us  and our chief rescue man Otter in the Ottermobile!

He was on call for our whole trip just in case , thanks Otter it was very reassuring

Then we were off...............

Though we passed this sign:

(I looked up "idiosos" and saw it meant "idiots", which was perhaps a bit unfair, then I realised it was "idosos" ie "elderly" , which is more appropriate....though on second thoughts....??Ed)

A four pointed cistus was spotted:

And another sign  as we approached a  bit of civilisation.....

                                                                   Very useful it was....

Walking trough the village we came across a bus stop with the poshest seating I had ever seen but no bus was insight so we had to carry on ....

Past the launderette...

The olive picking harvest was in full swing...

...Miriam wondered if Bica could be trained to pick them...

There was a lot of chat on our way mostly about the river crossing ahead and lunch .What was going to be first? 10km had been done already 8 to go and no river had been seen . Some had water shoes ,some had plastic bags .Others were going to be brave and go bare footed . Talk was to be had about how deep it was going to be  ?....how fast flowing it was going to be ?....how long was the detour?.... Frank who had done this before nearly had to turn back as the river was knee high !!

There it was on the map....

We crossed the dual carriageway and walked down a dusty road under the bridge and water was spotted in the distance , but first we had to admire the sweeping grandeur of the bridge....

In the end, bit of  an anticlimax......

................. so we had lunch. "What are you having for lunch I asked ? "  A reply of ham and cheese butties was heard . "Ahhhh "I thought, that was the reason for the rush at breakfast!

Here the leader departed from a fundamental AWW Commandment : Thou shalt not ascend a steep hill after luncheon........but somehow we made it, with cheese and ham indigestion belches to be heard!
Eventually back on the road heading for our final destination of Furnazinhas where we find no cafe no bars , disappointed we nevertheless did find our cars and headed off back to Alcoutim.

Well done to all for completing day 2
18 km
518 elevation gain
Rather slow 3 .7 kph....but it was almost all uphill....
4 hours 36 min walking time

The green line marks the trail

Thanks to  Alan ( & Ed) for some of the photos and to Otter  as chief stand-by rescue man !

We had dinner at O Canana that evening , following the usual session at the village bar beforehand.

VA Day 5 : Alte to Messines

VA Day 5 : Alte to Messines

This is sector 8 of the VA , but our Day 5 following 4 days at Alcoutim to  Cachopo : we are doing a series of one day walks in the central Algarve to avoid hotel stays....and to take it more gently!  9 of the original VAers  ( plus Bica) were joined by Susan & John , who had  done the Alcoutim recce with Jim & Gill, and David, who , of course, did the pathfinding for the original Algarve Way.

Carsharing from Messines to Alte worked well....perhaps too well....we arrived at the cafe, had a good coffee, waited for David...and waited....then had a starter photo...and at last David ( who lived nearest) arrived and we were off....

L to R : I'm sure you all know now who everyone is....

Ros had done some recce work on this section : parts of it were along busy roads, parts on a lot of tarmac, and one section along a precipitous ledge where her companion slipped and injured herself.  With discretion ruling, we set off under Ros' tutelage , having opted for the safer , and more scenic, tracks.

Ken was rather taken by one of the murals...

It was all uphill through Alte, until we saw the first of the VA markers, then onward and upward alongside a utilities trench, which had been there for some time before we arrived at Santa Margatrida : well known in AWW lore as Yves had acted the gentleman and jumped over the wall to retrieve Manuela's backpack....only to discover he couldn't climb back.(any ideas when that was?)

The path then flattened out for a good distance ( wonderful relief after Alcoutim....) whence we came across some inquisitive black pigs who unfortunately probably didn't have much longer left on this porcine coil...

Talk of porco secreto began to make us feel hungry. Ros had found a great lunch stop, but it was too early...

We came across a marker from the Algarve Way team, done by Terry Ames back in the day...

We passed some  pretty calves:

Are we there yet?

Lunch was taken in the gutter:

At length, Messines came into site  through the tunnel....

But a bit more uppy....

and a scramble....

...but our route veered south to Portela before looping back to Messines. Time to get into cars and drive to Alte for a well earned drink and retrieve the other cars. Most drove back along the N124, though Ros  took us on a very scenic, albeit longer, "shortcut"....

Anyway, lovely weather and good company for a good day's walk....photos courtesy of Alan, stats from Susan.....thought the  moving speed was fast.... 4.9kmh
