Ian Scott
(23.12.1942 – 5.07.2020)
The start of a new walking season is perhaps a fitting time to remember Ian Scott, a staunch AWW member and supporter, who died recently. In his youth, Ian had been a tough-as-old-boots rugby player and, when on retirement in the Algarve, he joined the AWWs under its founder Maurice Clyde in September 2001, he proved to be an indefatigable walker.
On walks, his speciality was being Tail-End Charlie; as such, he would encourage, exhort and escort the tired and weary for perhaps 95% of the way. Then, within striking distance of the end, he would accelerate like a rocket and, with shouts of “Let me through”, would gallop into the lead so as to be first to the bar. What he could not abide was to have to wait for his beer in a queue behind some pernickety coffee drinkers whilst the barman fiddled interminably with the espresso machine.
He did several Round The Corner walks, including the first one in 2002.

He was also on Rod Frew´s and Mike Pease´s 2003 expedition to Las Alpujarras in the snowy Sierra Nevada.

and he also used to reminisce fondly about another Spanish walk (date unknown) from Matalascañas in Huelva Province along the beach to the mouth of the Guadalquiver River (about 30 kilometres on sand) until they could catch a ferry across to Sanlúcar de Barrameda for a much need manzanilla or two.

It would be not be unfair to say that sartorial elegance was not one of his priorities.
